New Delhi. Suresh Chandrakar, the main accused in the journalist Mukesh Chandrakar murder case in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, has been sent to judicial custody. On Wednesday, Suresh was produced in the court along with four other accused—Ritesh Chandrakar, Dinesh Chandrakar and Mahendra Ramteke. The court ordered to send everyone to judicial custody for 15 days.

Arrest from Hyderabad

The SIT investigating this case had arrested Suresh Chandrakar from Hyderabad late on Sunday night. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P informed that the accused was brought to Bijapur on Monday. Earlier, Suresh’s brother Ritesh Chandrakar, Dinesh Chandrakar and supervisor Mahendra Ramteke have been arrested.

Dead body found in septic tank

Freelance journalist Mukesh Chandrakar (33) had gone missing on January 1. On January 3, his body was found in a septic tank in Chattanpara Basti, Bijapur. After the murder, a conspiracy was hatched to hide the body.

Is exposing corruption the reason?

Mukesh Chandrakar had exposed corruption in road construction work in Bijapur. This report was aired on NDTV on 25 December. It is believed that this news became the reason for his murder. The said construction work was related to Suresh Chandrakar.

Action has been initiated against the illegal properties of accused Suresh Chandrakar. The construction yard built on forest land along the Bijapur-Gangalore road has been demolished. The process of freezing the bank accounts of Suresh and other accused is also going on.

Contribution of Mukesh Chandrakar

Mukesh Chandrakar had played an important role in the release of Cobra Commando Rakeshwar Singh Manhas from the captivity of Maoists after the Taklaguda Naxalite attack in April 2021. There is huge anger among the local people after his murder.

Government and administration response

Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma has claimed that Suresh Chandrakar was associated with Congress. Strict action is being taken against the culprits in this case. The murder of Mukesh Chandrakar has created an atmosphere of grief and anger in the area. The journalist community and the general public are demanding justice considering the murder of an independent journalist as an attack on democracy.
