New Delhi. Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury died on Thursday at AIIMS hospital in Delhi. 72-year-old Yechury was ill for a long time and was admitted to the ICU of AIIMS due to respiratory tract infection, where he breathed his last. As a prominent leader of CPI (M), Yechury played an important role in politics. He took over as the party general secretary in 2015, replacing Prakash Karat. His body will be brought to the CPI (M) office day after tomorrow, after which it will be handed back to AIIMS for research and teaching purposes, as he had donated his body for scientific research.

Sitaram Yechury was admitted to the emergency ward of AIIMS New Delhi on August 19. He complained of pneumonia and chest infection, after which he was shifted to the ICU. A special team of doctors was treating him, but his condition did not improve and eventually he passed away.

How was the beginning of your political career?
Sitaram Yechury entered student politics by joining the Student Federation of India (SFI) in 1974. After this, he became an active member of CPI (M). He was arrested and sent to jail during the Emergency, but he lived an important political life by firmly sticking to his ideas and principles in politics. There is a wave of mourning in the political and social world across the country on the demise of Sitaram Yechury. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed grief and wrote, “Sitaram Yechury ji was my friend. He had a deep understanding of India and he was the protector of India’s ideology. I will miss long conversations with him. My condolences to his family, friends and supporters.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed condolences. She wrote, “Extremely saddened to hear the news of Sitaram Yechury’s demise. His demise is a big loss for the country’s politics. I express my condolences to his family, friends and close ones.”
