Alert issued regarding ‘Asna’ cyclone.
A cyclone is forming over the Saurashtra-Kutch region of Gujarat in the month of August. Today, on Friday, this cyclone is expected to move over the Arabian Sea towards the Oman coast. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an unusual cyclone is going to form over the Arabian Sea on Friday. The cyclone named Asna will be the first cyclone of its kind in August since 1976. It is expected to move from the Saurashtra-Kutch region of Gujarat towards the Oman coast. According to the IMD, this cyclonic storm is expected to move from the north-east Arabian Sea and move west-south-west towards the Oman coast. The name of the cyclone will be “Asna”, which is a name suggested by Pakistan.
Meteorological department declared it a rare cyclone
The weather department said this will be the first cyclonic storm to emerge over the Arabian Sea in August after 1976. “The development of a cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea in the month of August is a rare activity,” the IMD said. The 1944 cyclone also intensified after emerging over the Arabian Sea and later weakened in the middle of the sea. In 1964, a small cyclone developed near the South Gujarat coast and weakened near the coast. Similarly, a total of 28 such systems have formed in the month of August over the Bay of Bengal during the last 132 years.

“The unusual thing about the current storm is that its intensity has remained the same for the last few days,” an IMD scientist said. The deep depression over Saurashtra and Kutch has led to heavy rainfall in the region. According to IMD data, between June 1 and August 29 this year, Saurashtra and Kutch regions have received 799 mm of rain, while the normal during the same period is 430.6 mm. The rainfall during this period is 86 per cent more than normal.
