Kolkata-based International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) on Thursday termed as ‘sad’ the denial of bail to Hindu spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in a treason case by a court in neighboring Bangladesh.
Kolkata ISKCON spokesperson Radharaman Das said that the only positive aspect of the hearing of the case was that the Hindu saint was represented by lawyers, which could not be done in the previous hearing of the case before the Bangladesh court.
Radharaman Das said, “It is sad that his bail plea was rejected. We were hopeful that he would be released in the New Year.”
A Bangladesh court on Thursday denied bail to former ISKCON saint Chinmoy Krishna Das in a treason case.
The spokesman said Chinmoy Krishna Das’s lawyers would be considering an appeal in the Bangladesh High Court.
He said that Chinmay Das’s health is also said to be bad. “We were hopeful that on this basis and since he has been in jail for the last 40 days, the court would grant him bail,” Das said.
He expressed hope that when the saint’s appeal challenging this decision of the Chittagong court will be filed in the High Court, the interim government will provide adequate security to his lawyers inside and outside the court.
ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson had said on Wednesday that if any lawyer appearing in court for Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh is beaten up or threatened, then the interim government should take legal action.
Chinmoy Krishna Das was not brought to the court for Thursday’s hearing and was produced digitally.
He was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on 25 November.
