India Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar has been going on a three -day visit to China since 13 July 2025. This is his first visit to China after a violent clash in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh in 2020. Prior to this visit, China has said that the issue of choosing the issues related to Tibet, especially the Dalai Lama, is a big fork in relations between India and China.
Chinese Embassy spokesman U Jing said that the issue of Tibet has become a burden for India. He addressed Tibet as “Shijang”, which is its official name in China. U Jing claimed that choosing the successor of the Dalai Lama is completely an internal matter of China and should not interfere with any external country.
Recently, the Dalai Lama said on his 90th birthday that his successor would be chosen by the trust made by him, not by China. China is angry with this statement. India’s Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also said that only his trust has the right to choose the successor of the Dalai Lama, which caused China and enraged.
Jaishankar is going to Tianjin to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting and will also meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi there. The journey is part of an attempt to improve India-China relations, which deteriorated after the 2020 clash. In recent months, the two countries have taken several steps to reduce stress, such as the return of soldiers in Deppasang and Demchok.
China warned India to be cautious on the issue of Tibet, otherwise relations could be damaged. At the same time, India says that the Dalai Lama has been living a lifeless life in India since 1959 and its presence gives India strategic benefits against China.
