A case has been registered against at least 16 named persons and about 50 unidentified people to vandalize the police post and block the Bareilly-Agra highway during the procession taken out on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti in Badaun. Officials gave this information on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the Civil Lines area on Monday, when a mob involved in the procession led to a violent demonstration after a person was detained for questioning on the basis of a molestation lodged by a woman.
Manoj Kumar Singh, in -charge of Civil Lines Police Station, said, “On the basis of a woman’s complaint, the person was detained only for questioning. As soon as Ambedkar Jayanti procession passed, many people attacked the martyr Bhagat Singh police post. He broke the furniture, destroyed the official records and threw stones at a DJ vehicle.”
According to police, some people in the crowd were seen waving arms. Due to a limited number of personnel duty at the outpost, the officials present retreated temporarily to avoid the conflict.
The crowd also blocked the Bareilly-Agra highway for about an hour, disrupting traffic.
Singh said that the police have taken action based on video evidence and CCTV footage to identify the suspects. “We have filed an FIR against 16 nominated and 50 unidentified persons under various sections to disrupt riot, obstruction, sabotage and public system. Teams have been deployed to locate and arrest the accused,” he said.
Officials said that their investigation is going on and efforts are being made to restore peace in the area.
