The Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Friday clearly stated that it would continue to provide all possible assistance in the case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, facing a death sentence in Yemen.
The ministry said that it is also in touch with some friendly governments governments as part of efforts to reach the solution in this case.
In fact, a nurse, hailing from Kollangode in Palakkad district of Kerala, has been found guilty of killing a Yemeni citizen in July 2017.
The hanging of a 38 -year -old Indian citizen was scheduled on 16 July, but was postponed after the intervention of Indian officials. He is currently lodged in the prison of Sana, the capital of Yemen, under the control of Iran -backed Hothis.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said in his weekly media briefing, “We are constantly monitoring the matter and providing all possible help. We are also in touch with governments of some friendly countries on this issue.”
He said, “I would like to repeat once again that this is a sensitive and complex case. Media reports based on wrong information and speculation are extremely useless and we urge everyone to take care of this.”
Some reports claim that his death sentence has been canceled and an agreement has been reached for his release. Jaiswal said, “Such reports are wrong. This is a sensitive matter and we urge all sides to stay away from wrong information.”
He said, “As I told you earlier, this is a sensitive matter and the Government of India is providing all possible assistance in this matter. As a result of our concrete efforts, local authorities in Yemen have postponed his punishment.”
In 2020, a Yemeni court sentenced him to death and the country’s Supreme Judicial Council rejected his appeal in November 2023. India has no diplomatic appearance in Yemen and diplomats of the Indian Mission in Saudi Arabia are looking into the matter.
