The administration on Saturday prohibited offering Eid prayers at Idgah Maidan and Jama Masjid located in the old city of Srinagar, while Hurriyat Conference President Mirwaiz Umar Farooq claimed that he had been put under house arrest.
The management of the historic Jama Masjid said in a statement, “Srinagar-based Anjuman Aukaf Jama Masjid is deeply sorry that the authorities have once again not allowed Eid-ul-Azha prayers at Idgah as well as Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid.” The statement said that the authorities did not even allow the morning (fajr) prayers.
In a post on the social media forum ‘X’, Mirwaiz strongly condemned the administration’s move. Mirwaiz said, “Eid Mubarak! Once again Kashmir has faced a sad reality: Eid prayers were not read in Eidgah and Jama Masjid is also closed for the seventh consecutive year. I too have been kept under house arrest in my house.”
He said, “Muslims are denied their fundamental right to offer namaz in Muslim -dominated region, even on their most important religious occasion celebrated worldwide!”
Mirwaiz said, “It is a shame for those who rule us and also for those who have been elected by the people and who prefer to remain silent even when our rights are repeatedly crushed.”
