The Government of India has announced to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 with immediate effect. India has also released a formal letter to Pakistan on Thursday. It was clarified in the letter that the decision to suspend the treaty was taken by the Government of India after intensive deliberations. The Indus Water Agreement between India and Pakistan was signed in 1960. Under the agreement, India got the water rights of Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab to Pakistan and the water rights of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej to India. About 80% of Pakistan’s agricultural irrigation is dependent on the Indus Water System. The water crisis in Pakistan will arise in Pakistan and it will affect agriculture.
