New Delhi. Indonesia President Prabovo Subyanto has been invited as the chief guest at the 76th Republic Day celebrations of India. How is the chief guest of Republic Day chosen?
The chief guest of Republic Day is selected under a detailed process, which the Ministry of External Affairs executes. This process begins about six months before the ceremony.
The following aspects are noticed while choosing the chief guest:
Political and diplomatic relations economic and defense cooperation cultural and historical relations importance in global context
The purpose of strengthening future relations
Many times it is invited when having a good relationship with a country, while sometimes invitations are sent so that relations with that country can be strengthened in future. In addition, the chief guest is also selected keeping in mind a particular purpose or strategic need.
Invitation process
The list of proposed countries for the chief guest is sent to the President and the Prime Minister. After getting their approval, the availability of the leader concerned is investigated. If they are available, the Ministry of External Affairs formally sends invitation and maintains contact with the country concerned.
