It is a special coincidence that the President of Indonesia was also made the chief guest in India’s first Republic Day (1950). In 1955, Pakistan Governor General Malik Ghulam Mohammed and Pakistan Agriculture Minister Rana Abdul Hamid became Chief Guest on India’s Republic Day in 1965. US President Barack Obama also attended India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2015 as the chief guest.

How is the chief guest of Republic Day chosen?

The chief guest of Republic Day is selected under a detailed process, which the Ministry of External Affairs executes. This process begins about six months before the ceremony.

The list of proposed countries for the chief guest is sent to the President and the Prime Minister. After getting their approval, the availability of the leader concerned is investigated. If they are available, the Ministry of External Affairs formally sends invitation and maintains contact with the country concerned.
