Mohan Bhagwat
NE: While the dispute of temple and mosque in Kashi and Mathura is pending in the courts, the case of Sambhal remains in the headlines. Meanwhile, many such cases are coming to light where questions are being raised regarding religious structures. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has expressed concern over the resurgence of several temple-mosque disputes. He said that every day a new case is being raised, it is not right. He said this while giving a lecture on the topic ‘India-Vishwaguru’ in the Sahajeevan Lecture Series organized in Pune.
Some people feel that he will become the leader of Hindus
Mohan Bhagwat said that after the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, some people feel that they can become “leaders of Hindus” by raising such issues. Advocating an inclusive society, the Sangh chief said there is a need to show the world that the country can live together in harmony. Underlining the diversity of Indian society, Bhagwat said that Christmas is celebrated in Ramakrishna Mission. He also said that “only we can do this because we are Hindus.” “We have been living in harmony for a long time,” he said. If we want to provide this goodwill to the world, we need to model it. After the construction of Ram temple, some people feel that they can become leaders of Hindus by raising similar issues in new places. This is not acceptable.
Ram temple is a matter of faith for Hindus.
Mohan Bhagwat said that Ram temple was built because it was a matter of faith for all Hindus. “Every day a new case (controversy) is being raised,” he said without mentioning any particular site. How can this be allowed? This cannot continue. India needs to show that we can live together.” Several demands for survey of mosques to locate temples have reached the courts in recent times, though Bhagwat did not name any in his speech. He said that some groups from outside brought with them fanaticism and they want their old regime to return.
gone are the days of supremacy
He said, “But now the country runs according to the Constitution. In this system, people elect their representatives, who run the government. The days of hegemony are gone.” He said the rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb was also marked by similar bigotry, although his descendant Bahadur Shah Zafar had banned cow slaughter in 1857. He said, “It was decided that the Ram temple in Ayodhya should be given to Hindus, but the British got wind of this and created a rift between the two communities. Since then, the feeling of separatism came into existence. As a result, Pakistan came into existence.
The need to follow rules and laws
Mohan Bhagwat said that if everyone considers themselves Indians then why is the “language of supremacy” being used. Sangh chief Bhagwat said, “Who is the minority and who is the majority?” Everyone is equal here. The tradition of this country is that everyone can follow their own method of worship. The only requirement is to live in good faith and follow the rules and laws.
