Mumbai: A new twist has come in the extortion case registered against former Police Commissioner Parambir Singh of Maharashtra capital Mumbai. Businessman Ketan Tanna, who had filed a complaint of extortion against Singh, has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court, appealing for quashing of the case. Tanna claimed that pressure was put on him to file a complaint against Parambir Singh. The businessman claimed in the petition that he was threatened that if he did not file a complaint against the former Mumbai Police Commissioner, he would be implicated in false cases.
Hearing expected on October 8
Ketan Tanna said that he wants to free himself from the burden he feels on his conscience by correcting his ‘blunder’. Tanna filed the petition earlier this week and it is expected to be heard on October 8. The businessman alleged in his petition that at the time when Parambir Singh was embroiled in a dispute with the Maharashtra government of the then Maha Vikas Aghadi i.e. MVA alliance, a conspiracy was being hatched against this senior IPS officer.
Complaint was lodged with Thane police
The businessman claimed that he was called outside the bungalow of then Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and then DGP Sanjay Pandey told him to file an extortion complaint against Parambir Singh. He had filed a complaint with the Thane Police in July 2021 alleging that when Singh was the Thane Police Commissioner, between January 2018 and February 2019, he was extorted by calling him to the office of the Anti-Extortion Cell and threatening to implicate him in serious criminal cases. Extortion of Rs 1.25 crore was made.
‘Could not reveal the truth at that time’
The businessman said in his petition that he was ‘under pressure to file a complaint and he could not bring out the truth, but now he wants to act on his conscience.’ Tanna said that is why he has requested for the case to be quashed. (Language)
