Farmers ready for Delhi march, group of 101 farmers will leave from Shambhu border

New Delhi. The farmers, who have been camping on the Shambhu border of Punjab for the last ten months, have announced to march towards Delhi on Friday (6 December). Farmers are leading this march in support of their demands under the banner of farmer organizations United Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher told the media that the first batch of 101 farmers will march on foot from Shambhu border towards Delhi at 1 pm on Friday. He said, “The attitude of the government is to stop the farmers, but stopping them from carrying out peaceful protests will be our moral victory. If we go to Delhi on foot, there should be no reason to stop us.”

Major demands of farmers

The farmers’ demands include legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) of crops and other agriculture-related issues. Farmers have been protesting at Shambhu and Khanauri borders since February 13 after security forces stopped their march towards Delhi.

Ambala administration alert

In view of the farmers’ Delhi March plan, Ambala district administration has invoked Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS). Under this, there is a ban on illegal gathering and procession of five or more persons in the district. Ambala Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate issued orders saying that this ban will continue till further orders.

In view of security, the police have made multi-layered barricading on the Ambala-Haryana border and central paramilitary forces have also been deployed. Superintendent of Police Surinder Singh Bhoria has appealed to the farmers to maintain peace and obtain necessary permissions for the Delhi march.

Farmer leaders’ allegations

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher alleged that he felt as if he was being treated like a foreign citizen. He said, “This border looks like an international area. The government is making every possible effort to stop the movement of farmers.”

Ambala Superintendent of Police said that all necessary steps have been taken to maintain law and order. He said, “Following the law is our collective responsibility. All farmers are appealed to present their demands peacefully and within the ambit of law.”
