Chandigarh: Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal on Saturday asked farmers to reach the Khanauri protest site on the Punjab-Haryana border in large numbers to strengthen the ongoing fight for their demands including legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and other demands. Farmers are camping on Shambhu border and Khanauri border
Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at the Shambhu border and Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, 2024, after being stopped by the security forces from marching towards Delhi. Dallewal (70), who has been on a fast for a long time, has refused to take any medical help, due to which his health has deteriorated. The Punjab government is trying to convince Dallewal that if he does not want to end his fast, he should at least seek medical help. However, Dallewal remains firm on his stand.
Constant monitoring of Dallewal’s health
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had said on Thursday that a team of government doctors was constantly monitoring Dallewal’s health. Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar told reporters in Khanauri that Dallewal would speak for two-three minutes at Saturday’s event to convey an important message. Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of farmer forums leading the agitation at Shambhu border and Khanauri border, accused the Center of adopting an “obstinate attitude” and not making efforts to resolve the issue. When asked about talks with the agitating farmers to end the deadlock, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had on Wednesday said that the government will work as per the directions of the Supreme Court regarding the farmers’ protest on the Punjab-Haryana border. .
The apex court bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan had on Thursday clarified that it never directed Dallewal to break his fast, but was only concerned about his health and wanted him to be provided immediate medical attention.
