Vijayawada: Many people in flood-affected Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh on Monday struggled for milk and food packets. Not only this, people also complained about the alleged apathy of the government for the problems being faced for the last three days. Many areas of the commercial city have been submerged due to unprecedented torrential rains in the last three days. The flood-affected areas include Ajit Singh Nagar, Nandamuri Nagar, Andhra Prabha Colony, LBS Nagar, Vambe Colony and Ayodhya Nagar. Apart from this, similar situation is seen in Madhur Nagar, Ramakrishna Puram, New Rajarajeswari Peta, Old Rajarajeswari Peta, Pipula Road, Payakapuram, Shanti Nagar, Prashanthi Nagar, Jakkampudi and Pathpadu. People are also facing problems in Nainavaram, Chittinagar, Milk Project Area, Bridge Peta and other places.

Visuals aired on local TV news channels showed a woman crying in front of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, narrating her ordeal. People in Ajit Singh Nagar have been starving for potable water for the past two days. The woman complained to the chief minister that no boat had come to her aid, while another man standing waist-deep in water pleaded with Naidu for help. This is the third time in the past few days that Naidu is visiting flood-affected areas by boat. “Please understand our plight sir (chief minister). We have no water and food. Water has filled up to the first floor,” the flood victim complained directly to Naidu.

Long queues for food and milk

People were seen wading through the floodwaters carrying their children on their shoulders to a safer place, while an elderly woman lying on a mattress was seen being carried over the floodwaters by two men. Some people tried to escape the floods by using ropes. A long queue was seen at one of the flood-hit places to get milk and food packets. “I swam for food packets, but I did not get a single packet,” a man told a local news channel. Another person complained that no one came to help the group of stranded people. A victim standing in a long queue for milk packets complained that they have not received milk since Sunday morning. He alleged that they did not receive any help from the government. “These speed boats and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are just roaming around. We have come by swimming. Some people are voluntarily helping through private boats. There is nothing from the government,” he alleged.

power cut for 24 hours

Meanwhile, several flood-affected residents of Rajiv Nagar complained that nobody was paying attention to their area. A man from the area said he had come to get milk for his children. “We have not got rice, drinking water or buttermilk since yesterday. We are not being supplied any supplies,” said a woman passing by the milk queue. There was no immediate response from state government officials. Life in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada has been disrupted due to torrential rains for the past three days and power cuts for over 24 hours in many parts of the city.

The transport system is in a bad state

Internet and mobile telephone networks have also been disrupted and road connectivity to Hyderabad has been affected due to long traffic jams. Transport facilities in Vijayawada city and its surrounding areas have been badly affected. The road leading to Hyderabad via Khammam is completely blocked, but movement is possible via Piduguralla. M. Sailaja, a resident of Ajit Singh Nagar, said, “There has been no improvement in the waterlogging situation. The water level decreased a little, but the rain started again. It is feared that power supply will not be restored until the water level decreases.”

More than 2.7 lakh people affected

Ajit Singh Nagar is one of the worst affected areas in Vijayawada. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday said that many parts of Vijayawada city were inundated as rivers overflowed due to unprecedented rains, leaving over 2.7 lakh people stranded. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday assured Naidu of all possible help from the Centre to deal with the crisis arising after heavy rains in the state. Modi spoke to Naidu over phone to get information about the current flood situation in the state. Many places in the state are receiving heavy rains and Vijayawada is the worst affected.
