A special court in Karnataka sentenced former Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) MP and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda’s grandson Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment on Friday, 2 August 2025. 34 -year -old Prajwal was punished maximum under Section 376 (2) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as a fine of Rs 11 lakh, which will be given as compensation to the victim. The case is related to rape in 2021 with a 47 -year -old domestic assistant working in the farmhouse of the Revanna family in Gannikada, Hasan.
Special Court Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat found Prajwal guilty twice on charges of rape and sexual abuse. According to the prosecution, the victim faced sexual harassment at the residences of the Revanna family in Hasan and Baswangudi, Bangalore. Prajwal allegedly recorded the crime on her mobile, in which the victim was seen pleading to leave her. The forensic report and DNA analysis confirmed the evidence, which found the DNA of the covered on the victim’s clothes.
The matter came into the limelight when pornographic videos related to the covered through a pen drive came out in Hasan before the Lok Sabha elections in April 2024. After this, Javal fled to Germany in May 2024, but on 31 May he was arrested at Bengaluru Airport. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a 1,632 -page charge sheet in September 2024, including 113 witnesses.
Four sexual abuse and rape cases are registered against Prajwal, of which this is the first case in which the hearing was completed. Hearing of other cases is still going on. Prajwal claimed a conspiracy in the court, but the court convicted him on the basis of evidence. The case has put the JD-S and his allies in a politically uncomfortable position.
This decision gives a message of strict action against women in Karnataka. The victim’s bravery and the boom of the legal process helped to settle the case in 14 months.
