Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi took over as Assam Congress President on Tuesday and he is fully prepared to lead the party in next year’s assembly elections.
He was handed over the reins of the post by Bhupen Kumar Bora, the outgoing president at the State Congress headquarters here, who took over the command of the state’s main opposition party for more than three years.
Senior party leaders were present on the occasion including All India Congress Committee General Secretary Jitendra Singh and Leader of Opposition Devvrat Saikia in the state assembly.
Gogoi visited Kamakhya Temple before taking over as the president of the state unit of the Congress.
Talking to reporters after taking charge, Gogoi said that the party will continue to be inspired by its ideology of equality and inclusion.
He said, “From the ideology of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru to Hiteshwar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi, we will take forward the party together.”
Gogoi was named the new chief of the state unit by the party’s central leadership last week, at a time when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was attacking him over alleged relations with his British wife’s Pakistani spy agency ISI.
