The absconding convict who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Godhra train massacre case has been arrested in a case of theft in Pune district of Maharashtra. The police gave this information on Monday.
Police said that Pune Rural Police arrested Salim Zarda on 22 January, who was among the 31 convicts who were sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2002 Godhra train massacre case.
Zarda came out of Gujarat jail on 17 September 2024 on a seven -day parole and after that he escaped.
Inspector Dinesh Taade of Alfata Police Station said, “We arrested him (Salim Zarda) and his gang members in a case of theft on 22 January.” He used to carry out the theft incident in rural areas of Pune. Investigation revealed that he is also guilty of the Godhra train massacre case. ”He said that the investigation revealed three such cases in which Zarda was involved.
The official said, “He used to come to Pune district from Godhra in Gujarat with his gang and carried out the theft incident.”
Zarda and others were convicted on 27 February 2002 for arson in the S-6 compartment of Sabarmati Express in Godhra. 59 people lost their lives in this scandal.
