New Delhi. The Modi government has given some options to the family members of late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his memorial. It is being said that the Central Government can give one to one and a half acre of land for the memorial of Manmohan Singh near the National Memorial, Raj Ghat or Kisan Ghat. Officials of the Urban Development Ministry have also visited these sites. The government has asked the family members of Manmohan Singh to first form a trust because according to the new policy, land can now be allotted only in the name of the trust.
An application will be made by the Trust for the land for Manmohan Singh’s memorial, after which the land will be allotted. After allotment of land, MoU will be signed with CPWD and then the construction work of the memorial can begin. There is a possibility that the government may also give land for Manmohan Singh’s memorial near the tombs of former Prime Ministers Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi. Manmohan Singh died on 26 December at Delhi AIIMS. His last rites were performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat on 28 December.
The central government has declared seven days of national mourning in the country. After the death of Manmohan Singh, Congress had written a letter to the government demanding space for his funeral and memorial. Congress National General Secretary had said that his memorial should be built at the place where Manmohan Singh’s last rites are performed. The Central Government had accepted the decision to give land for the memorial on the same day. However, BJP alleged that Congress is trying to take political advantage of Manmohan Singh’s demise.
