The government has started the process of identifying the site to build a memorial for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and is in touch with Singh’s family to give the final approval to the site.
Sources said Central Public Works Department (CPWD) officials inspected the sites around Sanjay Gandhi’s memorial at the National Memorial and identified some places where the memorial could be built.
He said the government is in touch with the former prime minister’s family and has discussed three or four options for the location of the memorial.
Sources said no venue has been finalized yet and everything will be done in consultation with Singh’s family.
The Center will form a trust before allocating the selected land for the memorial.
The government has already informed the former Prime Minister’s family about its desire to build a memorial.
Former Finance Minister and two-time Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, known as the father of economic reforms in India, died on 26 December. He was 92 years old.
Congress had criticized the government for performing Singh’s last rites at Nigambodh Ghat. There was a round of allegations and counter-allegations between BJP and Congress regarding the last rites and construction of the memorial.
