Heavy police forces are deployed at Khanauri and Shambhu border. According to the latest information, the picket site has been evacuated. Internet service has been discontinued in Patiala. The United Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been agitating since February last year. They say that their movement will continue till the government does not accept their demands.

Farmers demands

Conversation

Earlier, the seventh round of talks between the farmers and the government in Chandigarh were inconclusive. After a conversation for more than three hours, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that the talks will continue and the next meeting will be held on May 4. The next meeting will take place on May 4.” However, he did not answer any media questions. The discussion was mainly focused on the demand for a legal guarantee of the MSP for crops.

Farmer leaders insisted that there will be no problem in implementing the law guaranteeing the MSP (for crops). He also mentioned the media reports that said that the US government is pressurizing the Government of India to remove import duty on agricultural products. Apart from Shivraj, Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also attended the talks held at Mahatma Gandhi Public Administration Institute in Sector-26 in Chandigarh. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudis and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak also participated in the conversation. It was a seventh round of talks between the two sides since February last year.

Government committed to welfare of farmers

While addressing the farmers, Shivraj reiterated that the government is committed to their welfare. He reminded how the government has regularly intervened to solve the problems faced by farmers across the country. An official release said that the legal, economic and other aspects of various demands of the farmers were considered in the meeting. It said that on the basis of discussion, the government has decided to consult with other stakeholders including states and central-wide territories, traders, exporters and food processing industry, besides farmers organizations across the country.
