New Delhi. The new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sanjeev Khanna, was administered the oath by President Draupadi Murmu today. With this, Justice Khanna became the 51st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud retired from his post on November 10 itself. He had proposed the name of Justice Khanna for the new CJI. Justice Khanna’s tenure as Chief Justice will be only for 6 months. He will retire on 13 May 2025. Although many important cases are pending in the Supreme Court, it remains to be seen on which important cases the CJI gives the decision during his tenure of 6 months.

Only last week, the Supreme Court has recognized Aligarh Muslim University as entitled to minority status, but a bench of 3 judges of the Supreme Court will be formed to decide whether it should get minority status or not. This new bench will hear this case separately and give its decision. At the same time, hearing on the matter related to caste census in Bihar is also going on in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has to decide whether Bihar government has the right to conduct caste census or not, possibly Justice Khanna can give the decision on this during his tenure.

Apart from this, hearing is pending in the Supreme Court on the petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Muslim Women (Protection of Marriage Rights) Act, 2019. On this also, the bench headed by Justice Khanna can hear and give a decision. Even before this, Justice Khanna has been a part of the Supreme Court bench which gave verdict in many important cases. Justice Khanna has been on the bench that gave its verdict on the petition related to abrogation of Article 370. At the same time, Justice Khanna was also included in the bench which gave many other decisions including declaring electoral bonds unconstitutional.
