How much does the government earn from tax? Know how much its contribution is in the treasure

According to the documents of the Union Budget 2025-26, the maximum of 66 paise in the government treasury will come from direct and indirect taxes. The budget documents presented in Parliament on Saturday stated that about 24 paise will come from borrowings and other liabilities, nine paise disinvestment will come from non-tax revenue and a penny will come from non-lending capital receipts.

 
According to this, direct taxes including corporate and personal income tax will contribute about 39 paise, while 22 paise from income tax and 17 paise from corporate tax. Among indirect taxes, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will contribute a maximum of 18 paise to the revenue of each rupee.

Apart from this, the government is expecting five paise out of each rupee from excise duty and four paise from customs duty.

According to the Union Budget 2025-26 presented in Parliament on Saturday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the collection from “borrowings and other liabilities” will be 24 paise per rupee.

On the expenditure side, the outlay was 20 paise and 22 paise on each rupee respectively for the share of interest payments and the share of the states in taxes and charges. The allocation for defense was eight paise per rupee.

The expenditure on central sector schemes will be 16 paise out of each rupee, while the allocation for centrally sponsored schemes is eight paise. The expenditure on the Finance Commission and other transfer has been fixed at eight paise. Six paise and four paise will be spent on subsidy and pension respectively.

The government will spend eight paise out of each rupee on ‘other expenditure’.
