Markandeya Katju is a former judge of the Supreme Court. He has also been the President of the Press Council of India. He was born on 20 September 1946 in Lucknow. His father Shiv Nath Katju was a judge of the Allahabad High Court, and Dada Kailash Nath Katju was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and the Governor of West Bengal-Odisha.
Katju started advocating in the Allahabad High Court in 1970. He later became a permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court and then was the Chief Justice of Madras High Court and Delhi High Court. In 2006, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of India, where he was known for his rapid settlement ability (100+ cases a week).
From 2011 to 2014, he was the President of the Press Council of India. Katju is famous for his impeccable opinion, due to which he was often in controversies. Once he had said that 90% of Indians are “stupid”, who are misled in the name of religion and caste. Due to his statements, he also faced opposition from people several times.
