IB Chief Tapan Deka extended tenure
According to the Government of India order, Tapan Deka, head of Intelligence Bureau (IB), has been again expanded for a year during his tenure. Earlier, he was expanded by the appointment committee of the cabinet to June 2025. The government order said, “The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has given exemption in the provisions of FR56 (D) and Rule 16 (1A) of All India Services (Death Cum Deaths Cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, for a period of 30.06.2025 to a period of 30.06.2025 to a period of one year or from the next orders, whatever it is earlier, as Director of Intelligence, Sri Tapan Kumar Deka (HPS: 888) as Director of Intelligence Bureau. Has been approved.”
Who is IB chief Tapan Kumar Deka?
IPS officer Pawan Deka, who is the 28th Director of Intelligence Bureau, took over in July 2022 with his predecessor Arvind Kumar. He joined the Intelligence Bureau in 1995 and has since been involved in important operations since then.
Born on 25 February 1963 in Sarathebari, Assam, Deka has a brilliant career as an IPS officer.
After completing a master’s degree in Physics from Delhi University, he passed the selection process for the Indian Police Service in his first attempt and became part of the Himachal Pradesh cadre in 1988.
Tapan Deka served as Deputy Director, Joint Director, Additional Director and Special Director after joining the Intelligence Bureau in 1995.
Deka also received the President’s medal for police service in 2012.
He served in the US and was India’s main strength in ending the Pakistan -sponsored Mujahideen group. He was part of the investigation into 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and involved in bringing the culprits into the dock of justice.
He also handled north-eastern extremism and anti-terrorism campaigns in Kashmir.
