New Delhi. The opposition has gathered signs of 50 MPs of Rajya Sabha to impeach Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of Allahabad High Court. A proposal was sent by the opposition to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to impeach Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat contacted the 54 MPs who were named in the impeachment motion. On this, 44 MPs confirmed the signature. At the same time, the newspaper Indian Express has reported that 6 more MPs have confirmed the signature. In this way, 50 Rajya Sabha MPs required to impeach Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav have been gathered by the opposition.

The Rajya Sabha Secretariat has stated that 9 of the MPs who have signed in the opposition’s proposal to impeach Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav are not matching the signature record of 9. On 13 December 2024, Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Kapil Sibal handed over the impeachment motion of 54 MPs to Rajya Sabha General Secretary PC Modi.

Justice Shekhar Yadav of Allahabad High Court has been accused by the opposition that he took part in a Vishwa Hindu Parishad i.e. VHP program in Prayagraj on 8 December 2024. The opposition alleges that Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav gave a speech at this VHP program. The opposition says that Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav supported the UCC in the speech and said that he has no hesitation saying that it is India and the country will run according to the wishes of the majority. Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav was also accused by the opposition that he criticized the Muslim community in the speech and said that if our traditions were abolished the evils like Sati, female feticide and Jauhar, then more than one marriage practice should also end. This statement of Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav has been described by the opposition as a violation of hate speech and constitutional principles.
