India told the United Nations Security Council that it considers to combat maritime security and terrorism as important for its national security and economic interests.
India said that it has continued to develop its strategy in response to new threats and geopolitical changes in the Indo-Pacific region.
India’s permanent representative Ambassador to the United Nations, Parvatneni Harish, said on Tuesday, “India with long coastline, excessive number of marine trips and competent maritime forces India is actively playing its role as a responsible marine force for protecting its interests and dealing with emerging threats.”
He addressed the high -level open debate of the UNSC on the topic of the high -level open debate of the UNSC on the topic of ‘maintaining international peace and security: strengthening of maritime security’ for May under the chairmanship of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Chairman Kiriyakos Mitsotakis for May.
Harish said, “India considers to combat marine security and terrorism very important for its national security and economic interests. Its approach balances strong defense capabilities, regional diplomacy, international cooperation and development of domestic infrastructure. India has continued to develop its strategy in response to new threats and geopolitical changes in the Indo-Pacific region. ”
India underlined that maritime security is the cornerstone of economic development as important trade routes, energy supply and geopolitical interests are connected to the oceans.
Harish said that India is committed to promoting an independent, open and rule-based marine system according to the principles of the United Nations Conference (UNCLOS) on sea law.
Addressing a high -level discussion, United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Gutaras said that the discussion emphasizes that the basic condition to maintain maritime security is that all countries honor the United Nations Charter and the international law shown in UNCLOS.
Gutaras said that in the last few years, the Security Council has tried to deal with many threats weakening marine security and global peace, including piracy, armed robbery, trafficking and organized crime to shipping, uptate installations and destructive acts against unique installations and important infrastructure and terrorism in the sector.
He said that these are important threats for international security, global trade and economic stability.
