Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that relations between India and Canada are ‘extremely important’ and the two countries should work together in various fields to benefit both New Delhi and Ottawa.
Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney held bilateral discussion on the sidelines of the G7 Summit here on Tuesday.
This was the first meeting between the two leaders since Carney took over in May 2025.
Modi congratulated Carney for a ‘excellent victory’ in the election and said, “I am sure that under your leadership we will be able to work in a positive way and take the India-Canada relations forward.”
In his address before the bilateral meeting, Modi said, “I believe India-Canada relations are very important and the two countries should work together so that both sides get beneficial support in many areas.” He said that Canadian companies have invested extensively in India and Indian people have also invested a lot in Canada.
Modi said, “Both of us (India and Canada) are standing for democratic values. We can together strengthen democratic values, strengthen humanity.” He said, “If the two countries work together and use all our resources better, then we can work for the welfare of the whole humanity.” Modi said, “I am confident that we will be able to do this work.”
Modi arrived in Canada at the invitation of Carney to attend the G7 Summit.
Modi said in a post on ‘X’, “The meeting with Prime Minister Mark Karney was great. Congratulations to him and the Canadian government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit.” He said, “India and Canada are associated with strong belief in democracy, freedom and legal rule. Prime Minister Carney and I are ready to work together to speed up India-Canada friendship. Areas such as business, energy, space, clean energy, important minerals, fertilizers and others provide immense possibilities in this regard.”
Carney said in his speech before the meeting that hosting Modi in G7 is a great honor. He said that India has been participating in G7 since 2018 and is a proof of ‘the importance of your country, your leadership and the importance of issues that we want to deal with together.
Carney said, “These include our fight against energy security, energy change to the future of artificial intelligence; our fight against international repression, terrorism, other factors, which we can do together.”
Carney said, “I am very happy to see you (Modi) here. I am very happy to come here and I am eagerly waiting for our discussion.” Modi said that after 2015, he was happy to get an opportunity to come to Canada and contact the people of Canada. This is Modi’s first visit to Canada in a decade.
He said, “India is the largest democracy in the world. During the chairmanship of the G20 Summit, we took many initiatives for the welfare of the world and today we are taking that resolution forward through the G-7 summit and is going to implement it with the help of this platform.”
Modi said, “It is a great opportunity for us to serve public interest and global interest. India has always been intention to promote global items and today we have the same opportunity through G-7.”
Carney inviting Modi to attend the G7 Summit is a sign of Canada’s new government’s intention to improve relations with New Delhi.
After the assassination of Khalistani pro -separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, there was a lot of sour in the relations between Canada and India. India had withdrawn its top officials after Ottawa tried to link the Indian High Commissioner and five other diplomats with the Nijjar case in October last year.
India had also expelled the same number of Canadian diplomats.
India had accused the government of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of allowing the pro -Khalistan elements to spread their roots. Economist Carney, by profession, took over as the new Prime Minister of Canada in March.
New Delhi said after Trudeau stives as Prime Minister, that it is expected to rebuild relations with Canada on the basis of ‘mutual trust and sensitivity’.
