Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya is going to be hanged in Yemen on 16 July. On this, on Monday, India’s top legal officer (Attorney General) R.K. Venkataramani said in the Supreme Court that India can do nothing to save Nimisha Priya.
He told the bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta of the Supreme Court. It is unfortunate… but we had a limit to our efforts, and we have reached that extent.
Why Nimisha Priya gets hanged
Nurse Nurse Priya, who hails from Kerala, was convicted in the case of the death of her business partner Talal Abdo Mehdi in Yemen in 2017. Nimisha accused Talal of mental and physical harassment, stealing money and seizing passports. It was told that she was trying to escape from the country. In this effort, he injected Talal unconscious so that he could withdraw his passport. But Talal died in this process. Nimisha was sentenced to death on behalf of the Yemen government on 16 July 2025 for being found guilty of murder.
Government of India reply in Supreme Court
The Attorney General (Advocate General) of India told the court that India adopted all possible diplomatic and legal method in the case. He said, “We talked to the public prosecutor there. He also approached an influential Sheikh. But there was no effect. The Yemeni government is not affecting anything.”
Even when it was hoped that the hanging was probably postponed for a while, there was no concrete result. Attorney General Venkataramani clearly said, “This is not a case in which the government is asked to go out of its limits and do something.”
When the court asked if the Government of India could give official support to the offer of blood money (compensation), he gave a direct reply “Any economic offer could be only a personal effort, not from the government.”
Apology for blood money ‘
According to Yemen’s law, now Nimisha is the only way to save Priya from hanging. Talal Abdo Mehdi’s family, which can be achieved by giving “blood money” (blood and money). But Mehdi’s family has rejected the offer of $ 1 million (about ₹ 8.5 crore). He denied forgiveness, saying that the case is of “honor and honor” and cannot be resolved with money.
Now only one hope
Sev Nimisha Priya International Action Council, who filed this petition, told the court that all legal routes in Yemen have ended. All the appeals were rejected… The Supreme Judicial Council upheld the sentence… The President approved the hanging, this was said by Babu John, the head of the campaign, who is leading efforts to save Nimisha.
He said that this case is a sad story – a woman who was trapped in a foreign country and had no way to get out of there. Nimisha went to Yemen for better employment in 2008 and later started a clinic there. According to Yemen’s law, he had to partner with a local man, but the same partnership became a tragic and violent experience for him.
Now that less than 48 hours of time is left, all expectations are on the family of the deceased. According to the Islamic (Sharia) law, if the family of the deceased accepts compensation, they can forgive and save his life.
