India has suspended the 1960 Indus Water Treaty.

New Delhi: The Government of India has announced to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 with immediate effect. Devashree Mukherjee, Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Conservation of Water Power, Devashree Mukherjee, sent a formal letter to Syed Ali Murtaza, Secretary, Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources, informed about the decision on Thursday. Let me tell you that after the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam, India had taken many tough steps about Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty. 26 people were killed in a terrorist attack on Tuesday in Basaron, Pahalgam.

‘Earlier also sent notices to amend the treaty’

The letter sent by the Government of India said that India had sent notices to Pakistan for amendment of the treaty earlier under Article XII (3) of the treaty. These notices cited the changing conditions, such as a huge increase in population, need for clean energy development, and a change in basic estimates related to water sharing. India says that due to these reasons, it is necessary to review the obligations under various articles and contracts of the treaty. The letter also accused Pakistan of violating the treaty.

‘Government of India decided after intensive deliberation’

India said that Pakistan has steadily promoted cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, due to which security uncertainty has obstructed India to make full use of its rights under the treaty. In addition, Pakistan did not respond to India’s request to start negotiations under the treaty, which is a clear violation of the treaty. Devashree Mukherjee made it clear in the letter that the decision to suspend the treaty has been taken by the Government of India after intensive deliberations. Explain that this step of the Government of India can put Pakistan in trouble in view of Pahalgam terror attack because this country is badly dependent on the Indus river system for irrigation etc.
