China has recently announced to build a huge dam on the Brahmaputra River near the border of India in Tibet. This move of China has created concern in India about the Brahmaputra river. Now the Government of India has said that it is monitoring other developments including the plan of China’s Mega Dam on the Brahmaputra river. Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh has informed this in response to a question in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
We are carefully monitoring- Union Minister
Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh said in a written reply- “The government is carefully monitoring all the development related to the Brahmaputra river. It also includes China’s scheme to develop hydroelectric projects. The government is necessary measures to protect the interests of the nation. Still working.” He said that issues related to across the border rivers are discussed with China through institutional expert-level mechanisms and diplomatic channels established in 2006.
Study on tributaries of Brahmaputra
Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh has informed that India has constantly expressed its concerns to the Chinese officials. India has asked China to ensure that any activity in the upper areas of the river does not harm the interests of the lower part. The Union Minister has stated that the Brahmaputra river basin has studied the major tributaries of Brahmaputra in Northeast India to form a strategy to reduce the ecological and socio-economic effects of hydroelectric projects in the Brahmaputra River Basin.

On behalf of China, a 60,000 MW mega dam is being built in the upper part of the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River in Medog County of Tibet’s autonomous region. According to the information, the name of this dam on the Brahmaputra river is going to be ‘Yarlung Jangbo’. The dam may cost more than US $ 137 billion. (input language)
