IndiGo flight 6E-6764, which was from Guwahati to Chennai, had to make an emergency landing on the Keme Gowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru on Friday, 20 June 2025 due to low fuel. The flight had 168 passengers and crew members. The pilot sent a “medade” signal in the air, which is a sign of a serious emergency. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely and all the passengers moved out safely.
According to Hindustan Times report, the aircraft tried to enter Chennai, but had to “go-round” due to bad weather and low fuel. Subsequently, the flight was diverted to Bangalore on the instructions of Air Traffic Control (ATC). The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has started investigating the incident and the pilots have been removed from the roster. Investigations are reviewing fuel planning and ATC’s response.
The incident took place in the recent Air India flight in Ahmedabad, exactly a week after the AI-171 accident, in which 241 people died. After that accident, DGCA ordered a thorough examination of Boeing 787 aircraft. The aircraft used in Indigo flight was Airbus A321 Neo.
Indigo said in a statement, “Our flight 6E-6764 was diverted to Bengaluru for technical reasons and it was safely landed. We regret the inconvenience of passengers and are making every effort to help them.”
Many users on the social media platform X described the incident as serious and questioned the security standards in the Indian aviation sector. Some saw it linking it to the Ahmedabad accident, while others appreciated the DGCA’s quick action.
