Amid violent protests in Manipur, the state government has suspended mobile internet and broadband services for five days in five districts – Inphal West, Infal East, Thobal, Citaking and Bishnupur on Friday night. The order came into force from June 7 at 11:45 pm.
Along with this, curfew and section 144 have been imposed in some districts. This step has been taken to prevent rumors, inflammatory messages and social media content to increase communal tension. In fact, rumors spread over the arrest of a person from the cookie-zo community in Moreh area of Tenganupal district, causing tension in the state.
After this, Quakeithal police post was attacked by a violent mob, in which three people, including two journalists, were injured in retaliation.
The state government says that life, property and peace system are being protected from internet closure. In view of the seriousness of the situation, additional central forces have been deployed and the public has been appealed to be restrained and cooperate in maintaining law and order. Internet services will remain closed till June 12, and this period may also increase if the situation does not improve.
