ISRO SpaDeX Mission: The Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) project of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) could not complete the mission even after coming very close to its target. ISRO said that the effort to reduce the distance between the two satellites from 15 meters to 3 meters was successful, after which both the satellites have been moved away from each other. Now after data analysis, docking will be attempted. This was the third attempt today. Even before this, the docking process had to be postponed twice.
Third attempt at docking
The complex process of connecting two satellites in space is called space docking. This third attempt of docking started after midnight on Saturday, under which the distance between the two satellites was brought to just 15 meters using slow drift technique. At that time ISRO said that both the satellites are ready to meet each other. As part of the attempt on January 9, when the distance between the two satellites was 230 meters, the satellite’s drift became more than expected and the mission had to be postponed.
Why was the docking process stopped?
Early today, when the distance between the two satellites became 15 meters, the whole country started hoping that this time the docking would be successful. The satellites were held at this position for some time. Pictures and videos of each other were taken from both the satellites, after which efforts for the next stop started. The satellites were brought to a distance of 15 to 3 meters when something went wrong and both the satellites were moved to a safe distance from each other.
In the last attempt, the drift i.e. deviation between the two had increased. To connect the two satellites to each other, it is very important that both are aligned. Even a slight deviation in either direction can cause the docking to fail. This time ISRO scientists were successful in keeping the drift at zero degree, but there was a delay in receiving the signal from an important sensor. ISRO sources said that irregularities were observed in the behavior of the proximity and docking sensors required for docking. Keeping the safety of satellites in mind, the on-board systems are designed in such a way that even in case of a slight disturbance, the safety mode of the satellites automatically turns on and the satellites move to a safe distance from each other.
When will the docking attempt be made?
According to ISRO sources, something similar happened today. Now the irregularities in the behavior of the proximity and docking sensor are being assessed in detail. The next attempt at docking will be made only after removing this flaw. According to ISRO sources, both the satellites will once again pass over ISRO’s ground station this evening, then an attempt at docking can be made, but if the flaw cannot be assessed by then, then wait for the next opportunity. have to do it. According to ISRO sources, after two days the visibility of these two satellites will not be available from the ground stations in India. In such a situation, we may have to wait till March for the next opportunity of docking.
