Chhattisgarh Police on Saturday detained three people in connection with the murder of 29-year-old journalist Mukesh Chandrakar. His body was found inside a septic tank on the property of a local contractor. A police officer told news agency PTI that the three detained people were being interrogated. He also said that the names of the accused will be revealed later.
Meanwhile, local journalists staged a symbolic road blockade at Hospital Chowk on National Highway 36 to condemn the murder. He demanded suspension of the Superintendent of Police of Bijapur district. The protesters demanded that a case be registered against contractor Suresh Chandrakar, his properties confiscated and bank accounts sealed. He also demanded death penalty for the contractor who enjoyed security cover and other accused involved.
Not only this, members of Raipur Press Club protested at Jai Stambh Chowk and demanded strict action against the accused. He urged the state government to set up a special investigation team to probe the murder.
In a statement, the Editors Guild of India (EGI) described the murder as “a matter of grave concern” which “raises suspicions of foul play.” The organization urged the Chhattisgarh government to “expeditiously investigate the matter and leave no stone unturned in bringing the culprits to justice.”
