Opposition members argue that the proposed change may disproportionately benefit the ruling party, giving it undue influence over the electoral process in states and weakening the autonomy of regional parties.
The bills, approved by the Cabinet last week, aim to facilitate simultaneous holding of elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across the country. During the presentation of the bill, 269 members voted in its favor, while 196 members voted against it. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said when the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill was tabled in the Cabinet for approval, Prime Minister Narendra Modi insisted that it be sent to the JPC for detailed discussion.
