New Delhi. Justice Yashwant Verma has been given notice in both houses of Parliament to impeach the Justice in the case of burning cash. Notice was given by 152 MPs in the Lok Sabha. In which there are also MPs of the opposition. At the same time, 63 opposition MPs in Rajya Sabha have given notice of impeachment on Justice Yashwant Verma. Before leaving the post of Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar had said that he will take a decision about this today i.e. today. It is now believed that due to the vacancy of the post of Vice President’s post, Justice Yashwant Verma will take a decision to impeach the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The 1968 law related to the investigation against the judges provides that if the notice of impeachment is given in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the same day, then the heads of the two houses decide together. If it is decided to conduct impeachment, then an inquiry committee of three members is formed. This inquiry committee provides for the Chief Justice or any other judge of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of a High Court and a well -known legalist. If it is decided to impeach Justice Yashwant Verma, then a similar committee will be investigated. Based on the report of the investigation, Parliament will decide whether Justice Yashwant Verma has to be removed from the post of High Court.
Justice Yashwant Verma has already filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court. He has appealed to the Supreme Court to cancel the report of the inquiry committee for the judges constituted by the CJI, Sanjeev Khanna. Justice Yashwant Verma has argued for this. He says that the inquiry committee went backwards to the law and asked him to prove himself innocent. Also, Justice Yashwant Verma has said in the petition that the inquiry committee has not been able to tell who removed the burnt cash from his residence. Justice Yashwant Verma also says that when the fire was extinguished, his daughter and staff went to the spot. There they could not see any evidence of burning cash. When Justice Verma was a judge of the Delhi High Court, on the night of 14 March 2025, there was a fire in the store room of his residence. In which the matter of burning cash was revealed, they were investigated by transferring the Allahabad High Court.
