The committee has also written in its report that it is not possible to keep such a large number of cash in the store room without knowing Justice Yashwant Verma and his family.
According to the bar and bench website, a witness of the burning of cash in the store room of Justice Yashwant Verma’s residence told the committee that when he went inside, the 500 rupees burnt notes were lying in large numbers on the ground. The witness told the committee that he saw so much cash in life for the first time and was surprised. The inquiry committee also investigated the role of Justice Yashwant Verma’s daughter Dia Verma and the judge’s private secretary Rajinder Singh Karki. It is being said that Rajinder Singh told the fire extinguishers not to give information about the burning of cash in their report. Also, the next day, he is also accused of cleaning the store room of Justice Yashwant Verma’s residence. Rajinder Singh has denied these allegations in front of the committee.
Media people also received 500 rupee notes burnt some distance away from Justice Yashwant Verma’s residence.
The then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Sanjeev Khanna formed an inquiry committee of three judges. This inquiry committee took statements of 55 witnesses in 10 days. Justice Yashwant Verma also claims that after extinguishing the fire, his daughter or staff did not see any cash in the store room.
