New Delhi. The Supreme Court has been prepared to hear the petition of Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Verma, although Chief Justice BR Gavai has separated himself from the hearing of the case. He said that I was also involved in the collegium choosing Justice Verma, so it would not be appropriate for me to hear this case. Justice Gawai said that a new bench will be formed soon for this. At the same time, Justice Verma’s lawyer Kapil Sibal has appealed to the Supreme Court to settle the case as soon as possible.
Justice Verma, in his petition filed in the Supreme Court, has demanded dismissal of the report of the inquiry committee against him. The inquiry committee of three judges has convicted the case of burnt cash of Justice Verma’s house. At the same time, Justice Verma says that he was not given a chance to defend himself. On the other hand, the process of impeachment against Justice Verma has started in Parliament. The proposal of impeachment to the presiding officer has been signed by 145 MPs from Lok Sabha and 63 MPs of Rajya Sabha. Let us tell you that a fire broke out at the government residence of Justice Verma in Delhi at the time of Holi. After extinguishing the fire, a large number of burnt notes were found to the fire brigade employees from a closed room.

The then CJI Justice Sanjeev Khanna formed an internal inquiry committee of three judges to investigate the matter. In the report, Justice Verma was found guilty in the cash recovery case. Justice Verma was asked to step down but did not do so after which the government was recommended to bring impeachment motion against him. On the other hand, Justice Verma has said in his plea in the petition filed in the Supreme Court that the Constitution does not provide the Supreme Court or Chief Justice the powers of disciplinary action on the High Courts or their judges.
