New Delhi. Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Verma has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding dismissal of the report of the inquiry committee against him in the cash recovery case. Justice Verma says that he was not given a chance to defend himself. In the report of the three -judge in -house committee, Justice Verma was found guilty in the case of receiving a burnt note at his house. This house inquiry committee was formed by the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Sanjeev Khanna and on the basis of this report, it was recommended to take impeachment action against Justice Verma.
According to the Bar and Bench, Justice Verma has argued in his petition that the Constitution does not provide supervision or disciplinary powers to the Supreme Court or Chief Justice on the High Courts or his judges. He has alleged that the three -judge inquiry committee concluded as per the opinion already and did not give them any opportunity to give information on the evidence. He also said that he was questioned in his absence from the witnesses and he was provided with his ‘summarized statements’ instead of video recording.
Justice Verma said that the then CJI Sanjeev Khanna did not give me enough time to review the final report of the committee before recommending me to be removed from the post. Let us tell you that at the time of Holi, there was a fire in Justice Yashwant Verma’s government residence in Delhi. Justice Verma was not present at home when this incident happened. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters found a large number of burnt notes in a store room. After this the matter came into the limelight. Justice Verma was posted in the Delhi High Court at that time, later he was transferred to Allahabad.
