Astronomer Kalpana Chawla’s birth anniversary
On 1 February 2003, an accident occurred, which shocked the whole world. The accident was that the columbia space shuttle crashed, killing 7 astronauts. Among these seven astronauts were Indian -origin American astronaut Kalpana Chawla. Today is the birth anniversary of Kalpana Chawla, in such a situation, let us know how he died in space?
Kalpana Chawla’s second and last mission
16 January 2003, the date was when Kalpana Chawla flew with the Columbia Space Shuttle Mission STS-107 for her second and last space trip. This was the 113rd mission of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. During this mission, astronauts used more than 80 science experiments in space for 16 days. However, the campaign ended tragically on 1 February 2003. The shuttle crashed just 16 minutes before the landing and 7 astronauts lost their lives.

Shuttle parts started falling
Shuttle successfully conducted many science experiments during the flight. He was just coming back to the earth that he lost his life due to technical fault. The flight problem began after a launch of 81.7 seconds. Insulation broke the outer fuel tank. During this time the spacecraft was traveling at a speed of 2649 kmph and was more than 20,000 meters high. There was no untoward incident in the earth due to the height of the shuttle at the time of the incident. The insulation hit the shuttle on the side of the left wing. This damage was so severe that the thermal protection system at the under of the spacecraft was defeated. On the way to landing in Florida, shuttle parts started falling over California. After this it was completely shattered on Texas and Louisiana. The accident was so frightening that no astronaut could survive.
Crisis after accident
After this accident, the scattered debris of shuttle appeared in the sky of Texas and Louisiana. It was broadcast live at local TV stations and reported 80 -ton flammable debris in the sky. Bob Molter of Texas told National Public Radio that he had seen shuttle breaking in the sky and saw crooked marks of smoke. Columbia Shuttle was one of NASA’s oldest shuttle and his accident was a huge shock to NASA.
