June 6, 1984 was the day when the Indian Army attacked the Golden Temple under Operation Blue Star on the orders of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to prevent Sikh extremism under the leadership of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in Punjab. It was reported that Bhindranwale had hidden large quantities of weapons in the Golden Temple complex.
Bhindranwale was the head of the radical Sikh organization Damdami Mint. He was killed along with his armed followers during the Operation Blue Star launched by the Indian Army to get the terrorists out of the Golden Temple complex in June 1984.
This operation was very criticized. Month later, on 31 October 1984, Indira Gandhi was murdered by two Sikh bodyguards at her residence in New Delhi.
Beant Singh and Satwant Singh were the bodyguards of Indira Gandhi and killed him on 31 October 1984 at his residence.
In the Lok Sabha elections held last year, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, son of Beant Singh (one of Indira Gandhi’s bodyguards), won by a margin of 70,053 votes over Aam Aadmi Party leader Karamjit Sing Anmol from Faridkot constituency.
