College sources said that the main accused of the recent incident is an alumnus of the college and the irony is that he is a lawyer of Alipur Police and Sessions Court.
Police have confirmed that two other accused are the current students of the institute and are senior to the victim.
The college administration said that the main accused was recently appointed as a temporary non-teaching employee in the institute for a contract period of 45 days.
The social media handle of the main accused has revealed that he is the former president of the Trinamool Congress Students Council Unit of the college and the organization secretary of the South Kolkata branch of the student organization of Trinamool Congress (TMC).
In publicly available main accused, he can be seen with several leaders of the ruling party of the state.
However, the Trinamool Congress has denied any connection with the accused and advocated a ‘severe punishment’ if the accused are found guilty.
Police said that the incident of alleged crime and harassment took place inside a guard room near the student union office on the ground floor of the college on the evening of 25 June.
Initial investigation has revealed that the victim reached college after noon to fill some educational forms after some people were called.
The police officer said, “According to the complaint lodged on Thursday at the Kasba police station, the accused asked the student to stay there.” In the evening, the student was allegedly taken to the room located on the ground floor of the college and the accused raped her till around 10 pm. We have sealed the room, and our forensic experts will soon reach there to collect evidence. ”
Sources said that the victim has alleged that she was sexually assaulted when she tried to go out of the college campus after rejecting the marriage proposal of the main accused.
According to the police source, the victim has alleged in her complaint that her video was also made during the gang rape.
The police officer said, “The victim has alleged that the three accused had kept the mobile footage of harassment with him and threatened that if he talked to anyone about the incident, he would put it on the internet.”
The official said that the mobile phones of the three accused have been confiscated and they have been sent for forensic investigation.
He said, “We are trying to find out if the video footage was also sent to the other number.”
He said that mandatory medical examination of the victim is being conducted.
Dr. Nayana Chatterjee, Deputy Principal of the college, told reporters that the main accused was given a complete temporary appointment under the contract based on a proposal passed by the governing body of the institute.
