Justice has finally been received after 8 years in the famous Patnagarh parcel bomb scandal in Odisha. Punjilal Meher, the main accused in this dreadful incident and former college principal, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court. Additional District and Sessions Court of Patnagarh has given this decision.
The bride and groom sent a bomb in the box of gift
The case came to light in the year 2018, when a newly married couple’s house arrived as a parcel. 26 -year -old software engineer Soumashekhar Sahu and his 85 -year -old grandmother Jemamani Sahu died in this bomb blast. While Soumya’s wife Reema Rani was seriously scorched.
The incident happened when the family opened a parcel as a wedding gift. But the hidden bomb in the gift box exploded and the whole house caused havoc. The wedding celebrations turned into mourning in one stroke. Investigation revealed that the attack was not done by any external terrorist organization or criminal, but under planning by Jyoti Vikas Vikas Junior College Principal Punjilal Meher. He was the first English lecturer in college and had a personal and professional rivalry from the victim’s family. Due to this enmity, he hatched this conspiracy with the entire plan.
Court also fined the convict
Punjilal himself made a bomb and sent him as a parcel and ensured that he reached the couple after marriage. He had no criminal record, but he carried out this dreadful incident using his knowledge and position. The case shook not only Odisha but the entire country.
Now the court has sentenced Punjilal Meher to double life imprisonment and a fine of ₹ 50,000. One punishment for murder and the other for the crime committed with the intention of seriously injured. After this decision, the victim’s family has breathed a sigh of relief, although their heartache has still not diminished.
The victim’s family wanted the death sentence
Soumashekhar’s mother Sanjukta Sahu said that “We wanted him to be hanged, but he got life imprisonment. This punishment is less for him, but fine.” At the same time, Ravindra Sahu, the lecturer of Geology and father of Soumashekhar Sahu at Jawaharlal College, Patnagarh, reacted to the court’s decision. He said, “We have got some relief from punishment, but my son and my mother will never come back now.
He further said, “I just want this incident to be a lesson for everyone that feelings like hatred and jealousy should not have any place in our society. This decision has brought a kind of justice to those who were living with this painful accident for 8 years.
