Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has formed a five -member committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Desai to prepare the UCC draft bill. Indian retired IAS officer CL Meena, Advocate R.C. Kodekar, educationist Daksha Thakur and social activist Geeta Shroff have been included as members. This committee will present its report in the next 45 days after which the Gujarat government will decide to implement the UCC. It is believed that the Gujarat government can also include cases like live in relationship in UCC like Uttarakhand.
In the 2022 assembly elections in Uttarakhand, BJP promised UCC after coming to power, which has now been completed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. UCC has been implemented in the state since 27 January 2025 last month. Under this, now people of all religions in Uttarakhand will apply equal laws related to marriage, divorce, property. Not only this, after UCC, now registration of weddings and live-in relationships will also have to be done compulsorily.
