New Delhi. A tragic accident has occurred in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. An Indian Army vehicle fell into a 300 feet deep gorge in Balnoi area of Mendhar sub-division, in which five soldiers were martyred and 12 soldiers were seriously injured. One soldier has survived safely in the accident.
How did the accident happen?
According to sources, this accident happened in Balnoi area of Mankot sector of Mendhar sub-division of Poonch district. The army personnel were traveling towards their post in a vehicle when the driver lost control of the vehicle. After this the vehicle fell into the ditch.

Police have informed that a total of 18 soldiers were traveling in the vehicle. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where the condition of some is said to be very serious. At present, relief and rescue work is going on rapidly. The incident occurred near the LoC, which falls under police post Mankot and police station Mendhar.

Cold becomes a big challenge
These days, severe cold continues to wreak havoc in Jammu and Kashmir. The problem of undeclared power cuts amid the cold wave has further increased the problems of the people. Protection from cold is being done through traditional methods.
The most severe 40-day winter in Kashmir, called Chilla-e-Kalan, is at its peak. Recently, Srinagar recorded the coldest night in the last 33 years, where the minimum temperature reached minus 8.5 degrees Celsius. Water has frozen in water supply pipe lines at many places.
Cold and visibility became the cause of accidents
Road accidents are increasing due to severe cold. Visibility reduces due to cold, which makes driving dangerous. It is being said that the accident in Poonch is likely to have happened due to similar reasons.
Rescue operation continues
The rescue team has taken charge at the spot and every possible effort is being made to rescue the injured. The administration has ordered an investigation into the incident and has appealed to be especially cautious while driving during winter.
