Full timeline of incidents of Manipur
Manipur is being discussed across the country due to incidents of violence and murder for the last 20 months. After these incidents, the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh finally resigned from his post on Sunday, 9 February. Let me tell you that the CM was constantly demanding resignation amidst long struggle for nearly two years between Maetai-Kuki communities in Manipur, but he had not resigned till now and kept saying that his government has to establish peace in the state. She is trying, but on Sunday, 9 February 2025, he suddenly met Home Minister Amit Shah and then submitted his resignation to him.
Violence erupted due to this
The Maetai community in Manipur had been demanding themselves to be included in the ST category for a long time and the cookie community had been opposing their demand for a long time. Please tell that Manipur is a major ethnic group and cookie is one of the largest tribes. There was a dispute over the same issue and this increased when tribal groups in Manipur had opposed eviction a few days before Chief Minister Biren Singh’s visit to Churachandpur on 28 April 2023 but the eviction campaign started. Churches were reportedly demolished and the tribal community was opposing it. After this, violent incidents started in Manipur.

November 7, 2022: The Manipur government passed an order bypassing the previous orders of 1970 and 1980, in which villages were excluded from the proposed Churachandpur-Khupum protected forest.
February 2023: The state government started a eviction campaign by declaring forest dwellers in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Tenganaul districts.
March 2023: Manipur cabinet decided to withdraw from the suspension agreement of operation with three cookie militant groups.
10 March 2023: Manipur government withdrew the operation with the Kuki National Army and Jomi Revolutionary Front.
20 April 2023: A judge of the Manipur High Court directed the state government to “consider the request to the Metai community to include the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list”.
28 April 2023: Section 144 was implemented in many districts of Manipur and internet services were suspended for five days. There was a clash between the protesters and the security forces, the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
May 2023: On May 3, 2023, at least 221 deaths and 60,000 people were displaced due to ethnic violence between Maetai and Cookie communities in Manipur. Incidents of arson, barbarity, riot, murder and gang rape were also reported in the violence. About 11 people were injured in Sacul in Kangpokpi district and two people died after being shot.
May 2023: Home Minister Amit Shah said that the arrival of cookie people from Myanmar created a feeling of insecurity among the people of Manipur.
May 3, 2023: Ethnic violence erupted between Maetai and the Cookie community in Manipur, which led to deaths and displacement. A “Tribal solidarity march” was organized by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) to oppose the demand for ST status of the Maetai people, from where the violence started again.
May 3, 2023: Thousands of people attended the tribal solidarity march organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSUM) of Manipur and it was held in protest against the inclusion of Metai in ST category. It is estimated that more than 60,000 people attended this rally. Violence erupted in the Turbang area of Churachandpur during the rally.
May 4, 2023: The Manipur government issued an order to shoot on seeing it and the Rapid Action Force was deployed with Army, CRPF, Assam Rifles and State Police to prevent violence.
July 2023: A shocking video of a attack in May surfaced when two cookie women were paraded by Maetai men soon after destroying their village. After the video of the incident surfaced, there were also large -scale demonstrations in many cities across the country.
20 July 2023: Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh defends his decision to limit internet access to the state.
July 29, 2023: CBI takes over the case of cookie women being naked in a naked state.
August 2023: A peace agreement was signed by Kuki and Maetai groups following two round formal talks.
7 August 2023: The Supreme Court took self -cognizance and formed a committee to consider relief and rehabilitation.
7 September 2023: There was a clash between Kuki and Maetai ethnic communities in Jiribam district of Manipur.
October 5, 2023: Human rights activist and Human Rights Alert Director Bablu Louetongbam was vandalized.
11 November 2023: Armed people attacked a relief camp and in the following days the bodies of eight Maetai residents of the camp were found, causing a stir and violence again.
17 September 2024: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that there is a need to negotiate between Cookie and Maetai communities to solve the situation in Manipur.
31 December 2024: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh apologized to the people of the state for killing hundreds of people during the caste violence.
January 2025: Manipur CM Biren Singh appealed to Naga leaders to help in resolve the crisis.
17 January 2025: The Union Home Ministry (MHA) has told members of the Cookie Council that there is a dire need to end violence to start any political negotiations in the struggling Manipur.
8 February 2025: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that his government is making all efforts to restore peace in the struggling northeastern state and to ensure that people stay together as before.
9 February 2025: N. Biren Singh resigned from the post of CM of Manipur.
