In protest against the removal of the name of the state from a government bus, the 48 -hour statewide bandh called by the Meeti organization ‘Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity’ (COCOMI) affected life in five districts of the Imphal Valley on Thursday.
As part of the bandh call, all business establishments, educational institutions, government and private offices remained closed and public transport roads were absent. Supporters at Wangkhai, Khurai, Kongba and Qwkethel in Imphal West district in Imphal East district came out on the streets to implement the shutdown and asked the persons who come out of the houses to return. The closed Wednesday started at midnight.
The bandh supporters also burnt tires on the roads in Naoramthong, Quakethel, Khurai and Wangkhai in the state capital.
Security has been tightened throughout the Imphal to prevent any untoward incident.
Central forces personnel have been deployed at strategic places at all points leading to Raj Bhavan.
The Manipur government on Wednesday ordered an inquiry regarding the allegations that the security personnel have forced the journalists to cover the name of the state in the bus carrying the Journalists at the Shirui Lily Festival.
It is alleged that the security forces stopped the government bus. Journalists were riding in the bus, which the government was taking to cover the tourism festival in Ukhul district on Tuesday. He allegedly forced the employees of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) to cover the state’s name with white paper on the bus window.
According to the order issued by the Home Department, the government constituted a two -member inquiry committee and said that on May 20, it will investigate the media persons carrying the media persons to cover the Manipur Shirui festival near the Gwalatabi ‘Checkpost’ on May 20.
The order states, “The committee will investigate any kind of lapse and suggest measures to prevent repetition of such situation in future.”

Amid resentment over the incident, COCOMI called for a 48 -hour general strike from midnight on Wednesday and demanded the resignation of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the resignation of security advisor Kuldeep Singh, Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh and Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh.
