A member of the organization has been arrested for allegedly firing on security personnel during a recent protests to protest against the arrest of a leader of Meeti organization Arambai Tengol and four others in Manipur. The police gave this information on Wednesday.
A senior official said 19 others have also been detained for alleged involvement in the violence during demonstrations in Imphal.
On June 9, a member of Arambai Tengol was arrested on Tuesday for firing a road barrier in Tera Sapam area of Imphal West district on charges of firing a road barrier.
Police said, ‘The arrested accused has been identified as Raj alias Binao Pangijam (39), a member of the Meeti organization Arambai Tengol. The Manipur police has also seized the weapon (pistol) used in the crime from him.
Police said that the arrested accused was produced before the magistrate and has been sent to police custody for eight days.
An official said that the police have also detained 19 people for involvement in road violence in Imphal East district.
The official said, “These people were jamming the streets, harassing the passengers and obstructing the liquor intoxication. Due to these, common citizens suffered a lot.
